Town of Hamden: Feasibility Study and Design of Roundabout at the Intersection of Ridge Road and Hartford Turnpike, Hamden, Connecticut
Client: CDM Smith
Owner: Town of Hamden
Freeman Companies is providing Landscape Architecture design services to the Prime Engineer for this important project which entails a complete design of a roundabout at the existing intersection on Ridge Road, where Hartford Turnpike Road meets. The Town's proposal for the Ridge Road intersection is a roundabout design which provides a safer connectivity between the intersection of Ridge Road and Hartford Turnpike with Basset Field with an emphasis on pedestrian traffic. The purpose of this design is to provide traffic calming elements of a traditional lighted intersection while still maintaining walkability. Sidewalks are present but not continuous throughout the intersection, and bike lanes and marked crosswalks need to be established.
An important design factor is the local fire station, as the final designs must accommodate dimensions appropriate for proper firetruck access and egress. Designs also included all necessary roundabout elements, including lighting, remotely controlled digital display systems, landscaping, sidewalks, pavements, drainage, markings and striping. The design of this project is the first roundabout to be constructed in the Town of Hamden and is funded fully by the Town.
