Expedition for Opportunity Travel Log - 4/17/16 – Trek Day 5 - Arctic Ready
Bobsled and I had a great day together today! She was svelte, steadfast and nimble over the ice. I, on the other hand, had a good and steady day but felt the expedition in my legs at the end of the day. Nothing a good nights sleep can't cure. My eyelashes got icicles on them today and froze half shut.
We're getting really efficient with our systems and have cut camp setup and takedown times in almost half. I call this Arctic ready, because we're figuring out how to handle the cold and get stuff done. Truth be told, we hate being cold, so we rush to finish our chores.
Today we covered 10.5 nautical miles and are at approximately 89 deg 45 minutes latitude on the 152 deg east longitude. We have about 15 nautical miles to get to the pole, but we're not thinking about that just yet. We still have lots of work to do.
We started the morning navigating super large pressure fields that looked like several major battles had taken place there. There were ice chunks and blocks strewn all about in haphazard manners, entire ice plates lifted upright, ice mountains, ice walls, etc. It was incredible! It took us awhile to pick our way through, but we made way with a little drama. After all, we're in Arctic!
