Expedition for Opportunity Travel Log - 4/4/16 – Snow in Svalbard
I have completed the first leg of my trek to the North Pole, arriving in one of the northernmost inhabited towns in the world - Longyearbyen, Norway..png)
FINALLY, I've overcome three intense days of the worst case of jet lag I've ever experienced, which was compounded by the 24 hours of constant daylight. It felt more like severe hypoxia.
After a flurry of activities (packing gear, testing skis, tents, team dynamics, etc.) on Sunday to get ready for our flight to Barneo, we learned that the runway had developed cracks in the ice and a new runway would have to be constructed, causing delays.
I'm happy that the delay gave me a chance to recover from my jet lag but sad that it's creating all kinds of logistical issues for us, such as flight plans, hotels, work, etc. For the next few days, I will be testing gear and completing preparations for the journey ahead. I am enjoying the sights and sounds of this remote village of roughly 2000 residents. For those of you in New England shocked by the frigid April temperatures and snow, know that it could be worse. Since my plane landed there has been a constant downfall of snow and the thermometer has not once reached zero degrees. This is a land of 8 months of winter, but there is something beautiful about the permanent coating of snow and ice that adorns the buildings and monuments. While roaming through this town, what has become most apparent is the hospitality of the people. Everyone here is welcoming and happy to share a warm meal and a story. I’m excited to begin the next leg of my journey. Hopefully, I will be leaving this wonderful town for the barren icescape of the Arctic Tundra in the next few days.
